Here’s a simple technique for creating a stencil sketch line artwork from photos. There are two things different about this method: the higher the image resolution the better and a three two step (repeat) filter effect will be applied to a channel copy instead of the RGB composite.

Step 1 Starter Image

To begin, click on this image and save it to your computer. Then open it in Photoshop to follow along.

Step 2 Duplicate Red Channel

Open the Channels Palette (Window > Channels) then drag-and-drop the Red Channel onto the New Channel icon command (encircled in red) located at the bottom of the Channels Palette.

Doing so will create a Red copy channel as captured below.

Step 3 Filter > Stylize > Find Edges

With the Red copy Channel active in the Channels Palette, go Filter > Stylize > Find Edges.
There is no dialog with this filter so the effect will be instant and is without any property settings. Its a one-shot deal and the result should be as captured below.

Step 4 Filter > Artistic > Cutout

Still with Red copy Channel active in the Channels Palette, go Filter > Artistic > Cutout.
At the Filter Gallery dialog, accept the Cutout properties defaults (or set them as captured below) and then click OK to commit changes.

[Note: If you do not see the default settings, hold down the Command key (PC: Ctrl key) and the Cancel command will revert to Reset. Click Reset to get back to the default active filter settings.]

The results below are useful, but lets take it a step further and reapply these same two filters for a deviation.

Step 5 Filter > Stylize > Find Edges

As with Step 3, reapply the Filter > Stylize > Find Edges on Red copy Channel to get the following result.

Step 6 Filter > Artistic > Cutout

Again, reapply the Filter > Artistic > Cutout command on Red copy Channel, except this time explore for various line edge artwork variants, other than the default Cutout setting.

I settled on the 4, 7, 3 property slider items below to get a rigid edge and sharp grayscale contrast.
Click OK to commit the Cutout Filter.

[Note: When youre in the Cutout filter and, as in this case, when the target is a grayscale Channel, adjusting the Number of Levels slider to the left will strip all grayscale tones and just leave you with black and white, as opposed to the far right with a wider range of grey tones. Each of them can make for separate variant results, as well.]

Now its just a matter of copying the contents of the filtered Red copy Channel and pasting them into a new Layer in the Layers Palette.

What I realized when dabbling with Filter Effects is that the best results are achieved with a higher resolution image. Heres another tip: avoid complexities of color algorithms by applying the filters to a channel copy (or a grayscale composite).

Final note - filter effects vary from image to image so the above settings may not replicate, but you will be able to adjust the sliders and tweak it to a close enough resemblance.

I will show you today how to add a beam of light to your photos.

Open a photo in photoshop from your stock photo. if you don’t have one you can use mine:

Open the photo you want to add a light beam effect.
Press Control-J to duplicate the layer.

With your Polygonal Lasso Tool draw a beam of light similar with mine:

Go to the Channels palette and click on the Save Selection as Channel icon

Now, click on Alpha 1 and press Control-D to Deselect.

Go to Filter menu > Blur > Gaussian Blur. When the dialog appears, enter 15 pixels

Now, you’ll need to load the Alpha channel as a selection, so click on the Load Channel as Selection button at the bottom of the palette.

Once it’s loaded, return to the RGB Composite channel by pressing Control + ~

Inverse your selection by pressing Control-Shift-I. Then press Control-L to open Levels, and drag the bottom-right Output Levels slider to the left to darken the surrounding areas

You’ll have to Inverse the selection again, so press Control-Shift-I again.

Now that you’ve inversed the selection, bring up Levels again, but this time drag the bottom-left Output Levels slider to the right to lighten up the beam. Again, lighten it up more than you think you need to, and then click OK.

Press Control-D to Deselect your beam.

Add a layer mask to your beam layer. Click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette

Press D and then X to set your Foreground color to black,
Press B to get the Brush tool, and then choose a small soft-edged brush from the Brush Picker

Now you can start painting over this girl , but only paint over the areas that fall inside the beam of light.

Another step you can do it is to lower the opacity of this layer.Try to change the opacity to 50 % or less.

This technique is very useful if you have the right photo.
